This course offers an exciting opportunity to explore how different theatrical traditions approach texts and performances. We’ll focus on the distinct ways British, German, and American theatre interpret and stage plays, with an emphasis on text analysis, performance practices, and comparative study.
We’ll begin by examining how art is valued and which voices are prioritized in the UK and Germany. How does this shape the kinds of theatre and performance that emerge in these cultures? We’ll also explore key practitioners from each tradition, using their work to illustrate these unique approaches. Students will be encouraged to bring in comparisons with Brasilian theatre traditions to the discussion.
Next, we’ll turn our attention to American theatre, focusing on Clare Barron’s Dance Nation and other relevant plays. We’ll explore how some contemporary playwrights challenge established artistic norms, and how US theatre fits into the wider global conversation about theatre and performance.
Finally, students will have the chance to experiment with staging scenes from Dance Nation. Using the tools and techniques learned throughout the course, we’ll explore how each tradition—British, German, and American—might approach the same text in different ways, and what each tradition can bring to the table.
This course is ideal for students interested in theatre history, global performance practices, and the art of staging. You’ll not only gain a deeper understanding of how different theatrical traditions shape the works they produce but also discover practical tools and creative insights to enhance your own artistic practice.
